What do I need to connect to the Internet?

You will need the following to get online:

• Desktop computer or laptop
• An active Telstra phone line
• An ADSL2+ modem (you can supply your own or have Telstra send you one)
• A Telstra Business Broadband account

Most business choose to have a Telstra supplied modem because it's more convenient and the Telstra tech support team are trained to support Telstra supplied modems. They are on call 24/7.

An ADSL2+ modem is a device that acts as a bridge between your computer and the Internet.
Your computer can connect to the modem in 3 ways; USB (cable), Ethernet (network cable), or Wi-fi (wireless).

The modem connects to the Internet through the telephone line.

How do I get a personalised email address and a website?

You may be in one of two places. You either have an email address that you got though a service like Hotmail, Yahoo, or BigPond and it looks something like bobs_truck_hire@bigpond.com or bobs_trucks@hotmail.com, or you may not even have an email address at all.

It will look more professional if you have something like bob@bobs-truck-hire.com.au

You will need to register the domain name you want and to do that:

• The unique domain name needs to be available
• You must have an ABN

Once the domain name is registered, you can either have Telstra host your emails or website which means Telstra will store your emails and website securely on their servers which are backed up regularly, or you can host the emails elsewhere.

How can I share the Internet connection with my computers?

You will need a device that your computers can connect to using network cables or wireless Wi-fi. Usually this device is a router.
The modem that is connected to the Internet is then connected to the router with a network cable.

There are however devices which act as an all-in-one where it is a modem and router with the ability to connect computers both with network cables and wirelessly through Wi-fi.
